The String of Shoemyer

Today we're going to focus on that little important idea of…health care. According to State Health Facts, a non-partisan group that researches health care issues, Missouri has over 700,000 uninsured citizens.

For this reason, Shoemyer is a member of the Healthy Missourians 2020 Committee. This special committee made up of seven Senators (both Rep and Dem) was created before this whole debate of national health care took over the media. They first were concerned for this state.

The senate resolution to create this committee mentions that Missouri is 38th in the nation for the health status of its citizens. As residents of this state, we just find this sad and slightly terrifying to know how low our ranking is. But, we're glad to have a senator like Shoemyer who is being proactive in this fight for health care.

The resolution also specifically states that the committee doesn't think it's the best idea to just make Missouri businesses take the brunt of the cost for spreading health care coverage. Instead, they'll work to come up with a long term strategy that works with employers, doctors, hospitals, and insurance companies.

A quick look at opponent Munzlinger's Representative website shows that he is not a member of any health-related committees. Four of his five committees deal with agriculture. Yes, agriculture is important in Northeast Missouri. And yes, we want a candidate with knowledge and passion for agriculture. But is that all we care about? No. We need someone who is fighting for jobs in all sectors, someone who is fighting to bring us out of 38th place in terms of health status.

Our bottom line: forget which candidate is red and which is blue. Forget if a D or R is attached to their name on the ballot. Is our future worth voting based on party? We strongly suggest all readers to consider Shoemyer. He cares about the people, not about the party. He will fight for your jobs. In a move that shows his dedication to this district and its wants and needs, he will fight for you to keep your constitution-given right of carrying a gun. And, as the national debate of health care draws on, he will continue to fight for your health care, right here in Missouri.

Shoemyer on the move: As further evidence that Shoemyer is invested in health care for Northeast Missouri, he attended groundbreaking ceremonies for renovations at Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis last week. The renovations will include, among other things, new patient rooms and a new out-patient surgery center. These renovations were made possible by a USDA Rural Development grant, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (aka "the Stimulus"). The main goals of this act are to create new jobs while saving existing jobs, encourage economic growth and make the government more accountable for spending. So, these renovations of the hospital will improve the health care in rural Northeast Missouri while also providing more jobs in the area.

Don't you just love how it's all connected?
